An inquiry has been initiated against Nilantha Jayawardena, the former Director of Sri Lanka’s State Intelligence Service (SIS), regarding his involvement in the Easter Sunday terror attacks of 2019. His lawyer informed the Court of Appeal that a disciplinary investigation is underway, following a recommendation from the Presidential Commission that investigated the attacks.
The inquiry was triggered by the Commission’s findings, which called for legal action against Jayawardena, and the lawyer has petitioned the Court to issue an order for the enforcement of the law. The lawyer confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and they have already received some relief in the matter, though further proceedings are expected.
The Easter Sunday attacks, which targeted churches and hotels, killed over 250 people and led to a major national security crisis. The investigation into Jayawardena, who was responsible for intelligence operations at the time, is a part of ongoing efforts to determine the failures in preventing the attacks.
