The Election Commission has directed all media outlets to refrain from broadcasting or publishing any creative work, including television dramas or films, featuring candidates running in the upcoming parliamentary election during the election silence period.
With all election campaigning activities set to end during this period, the Commission clarified that no media channel is permitted to show programs where candidates are involved, whether as actors or in other roles. The announcement was made by the Commission’s Chairman, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, during a special press briefing held yesterday (12th).
Chairman Ratnayake stated:
“Starting from midnight on the 11th until the conclusion of voting, all campaigning activities are strictly prohibited. Media cannot promote or diminish any candidate. No candidate running in this election may appear in any broadcast drama, film, or program. We urge everyone to cooperate fully with the Election Commission during this brief period. All campaign offices established at electoral divisions must now be removed. If candidates do not take them down, the police will do so.”
