President Anura Dissanayake recently addressed the media after casting his vote at the Panchikawatta Abeyasingharama temple polling station, sharing his views on the current political situation and his upcoming electoral hopes.
The President pointed out that throughout history, rulers who sought a two-thirds majority did so with the intent of passing laws that were often against the will of the people. He explained that unlike those rulers, he does not see the need for a two-thirds parliamentary majority, as he believes that a strong, people-backed mandate is sufficient. Dissanayake emphasized that the democratic laws he proposes are built on the will of the people, and therefore no one should be able to oppose them.
He expressed full confidence that the voters would deliver a clear victory to him in the upcoming election. Reflecting on his vision, the President urged his supporters to celebrate the win with peace and calm, focusing on the joy of their collective achievement.
Dissanayake also took the opportunity to call for unity in the country post-election, asserting that while victory is important, the most crucial aspect is to ensure that the nation remains stable and that any political differences are set aside for the greater good of the country.
These comments were made in a brief media interaction after voting at the temple polling station, with the President once again reiterating his commitment to upholding democratic principles throughout his campaign.
