Following the 2024 general election results, Namal Rajapaksa, the National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), is set to take the oath of office as a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the National List. This was confirmed by the party’s General Secretary, Mr. Sagara Kariyawasam, during a press conference held on November 16, 2024.
Namal Rajapaksa, the eldest son of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, has been a key figure in the SLPP and a prominent member of Sri Lankan politics. He has previously served as the MP for Hambantota District and held various governmental positions before being appointed to the National List in this election.
At the press conference, Mr. Kariyawasam addressed the party’s success in the election, saying, “We accept this mandate with great responsibility. In addition to Namal Rajapaksa’s position on the National List, our party has secured two councilor positions at the district level and one councilor position through the National List, which reflects the public’s trust in our policies and vision.”
The SLPP’s performance in the 2024 election has solidified its stronghold in Sri Lankan politics, and Namal Rajapaksa’s return to Parliament will allow him to play a crucial role in shaping future policies and initiatives. As a key representative of the Rajapaksa family, his appointment further strengthens the family’s political presence, which has dominated Sri Lankan politics for over a decade.
Namal Rajapaksa, who has been an advocate for youth empowerment and economic reforms, is expected to continue pushing for policies aimed at modernizing Sri Lanka’s infrastructure and enhancing its economic development. His return to Parliament marks a significant moment in the ongoing political landscape of Sri Lanka.
