The plantation workers of Nanu Oya’s Despod Estate joyfully celebrated the National People’s Power (NPP) party’s unprecedented victory in the recent general election, where the party secured 159 seats to form the majority in Sri Lanka’s 10th Parliament.
The workers and their families gathered on November 17 to mark the occasion, preparing and sharing traditional dishes such as milk rice and sweets. The celebration was notable for its inclusivity, as participants set aside party affiliations to come together in a display of unity and community spirit.
The event was attended by Mr. M. Bhaskar, the NPP’s Nanu Oya area organizer, who emphasized the importance of grassroots support in achieving this landmark victory. “This is a victory not just for the party, but for the people who believed in a vision of justice and progress,” he stated during the celebration.
The plantation community, a historically underrepresented group, expressed their hope that this victory would translate into tangible changes in their lives, particularly in areas such as labor rights, education, and healthcare access.
The NPP’s electoral success has been celebrated across the country, as the party’s progressive policies and focus on addressing inequality resonated with a broad spectrum of voters. Securing 159 seats has positioned the NPP to lead a government with a strong mandate to implement its reform agenda.
The celebrations at Despod Estate not only highlighted the joy of victory but also the expectations placed on the new government by communities that have long been waiting for meaningful change.
As the NPP prepares to take office, communities like Nanu Oya will be closely watching how the party delivers on its promises, particularly for marginalized groups. The celebrations served as a reminder of the powerful connection between political success and the aspirations of everyday citizens.
