Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s National Organizer, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, has expressed strong opposition to the government’s reported decision to remove a military base in the Northern Province and distribute the land to civilians. In a statement on social media, Rajapaksa voiced concerns over the potential impact of this move on national security.
Rajapaksa stated, “Reports suggest that the government plans to withdraw an army camp in the north and release the land to individuals, with further plans to remove several other military bases in the coming months. While the relocation of military bases and land release is a sensitive issue, it must be carried out responsibly, after consultation with security forces. We firmly believe that this process should not jeopardize the safety of our nation.”
Highlighting the importance of security, Rajapaksa emphasized that Sri Lanka had just emerged from a 30-year-long battle against terrorism, and national security remains critical for the well-being of all citizens. He cautioned that both the government and its leaders should prioritize the protection of the country’s sovereignty and security, regardless of the region.
