The excavation site near the Central Expressway under construction in the Wandurawa area of Veyangoda has been the center of intense activity for the past three days. Workers have begun cutting into a large stone block discovered during the excavation, suspecting that there may be hidden treasures inside. This excavation is being carried out under the authority of the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court, with the support of the Government Analyst and other relevant authorities. The operation is taking place publicly, with supervision from the Geology and Mining Bureau, the Department of Archaeology, the Veyangoda Police, the Road Development Authority, and the Mirigama Divisional Secretariat.
The site has a history of treasure hunters, and previous excavations in the area have attracted attention. The most recent incident occurred on September 20, when nine individuals were arrested for illegally digging in search of treasures. Following these events, the police reported their findings to the court, which then ordered the completion of the excavation within two days.
On the 11th, a significant stone block was unearthed. While it was not immediately recovered, authorities are now carefully cutting into the block to determine if any treasures are concealed within. The excavation efforts are continuing with the goal of verifying the presence of valuable artifacts or treasures within the stone, as many locals and treasure seekers have long believed that this area holds hidden riches.
