Speaker Ashoka Rangwala has announced that he will discuss the controversial behavior of newly-elected Member of Parliament, Dr. Archuna Ramanathan, and take appropriate action in the coming days. Dr. Ramanathan has faced significant criticism for sitting in the Opposition Leader’s seat during the inaugural session of Parliament and for making remarks that have been accused of inciting racial tension.
In his comments to the media on November 24, after a visit to the Kandy area, Speaker Rangwala expressed concern over the MP’s actions, emphasizing that the people of Sri Lanka, regardless of their regional or ethnic backgrounds, expect their leaders to contribute towards the country’s development and promote national unity. He stressed that Dr. Ramanathan’s actions seemed to reflect personal ambitions that do not align with the expectations of the people he represents.
Rangwala explained that the matter would be addressed in a more formal setting with Dr. Ramanathan, and that the Speaker’s office had already reviewed the MP’s social media accounts, which had sparked further controversy. Rangwala noted that the issue would be handled carefully and that further discussions would take place to ensure clarity and accountability.
The Speaker also reiterated that the government remains committed to meeting the aspirations of all Sri Lankans and emphasized that such incidents should not distract from the broader goal of national reconciliation and progress. Rangwala’s comments suggest that the Speaker intends to take a balanced approach, ensuring that the situation is resolved in accordance with parliamentary rules and the expectations of the public.
