Colombo, Sri Lanka – A deep depression located about 110 kilometers east of Trincomalee in the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified, with the potential to develop into a severe cyclone in the next six hours. The Sri Lanka Meteorological Department has issued a Red Alert, urging the public to be prepared for dangerous weather conditions across several regions.
The depression is expected to move closer to the island’s eastern coastline and could rapidly intensify into a cyclone. This system is already bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and significant weather disruptions across the island, particularly affecting the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, and North-Western provinces.
The Meteorological Department warns that the sky will be mostly cloudy across Sri Lanka, with very heavy showers and strong winds expected, especially in the aforementioned provinces. The Northern, North-Central, Central, Western, and North-Western provinces, as well as the Trincomalee and Kegalle districts, are likely to experience intermittent showers or thundershowers.
Some areas may receive very heavy rainfall, with totals exceeding 150 mm in certain locations. Other parts of the island could see substantial rainfall, with some areas experiencing heavy showers above 75 mm.
Authorities have advised residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, especially in low-lying and coastal regions, which are more susceptible to flooding and storm surges. The public is also urged to stay updated on weather warnings and avoid unnecessary travel during the cyclone’s progression.
The Meteorological Department is continuing to monitor the situation closely, and further updates will be provided as the system develops.
