Private importers have brought in 67,000 metric tons of rice since the government permitted imports on December 20. According to Sri Lanka Customs, the tax revenue from these imports amounts to Rs. 4.3 billion.
The imported rice stock comprised 28,500 metric tons of raw rice and 38,500 metric tons of Nadu rice. A tax rate of Rs. 65 per kilogram was imposed on these imports, contributing significantly to the government’s revenue.
This development follows the government’s decision to open up rice imports to stabilize the domestic market and address potential shortages. The measure aims to balance supply and demand while ensuring the collection of substantial tax revenue.
