Former President Maithripala Sirisena has issued a statement refuting claims made in a news report earlier today, which implicated one of his children. The former President described the report as false and based on misinformation from a police officer who is not part of his security detail.
Sirisena expressed concern over what he described as an attempt to mislead the public and tarnish the reputation of his family through baseless allegations. He emphasized that the media must exercise responsibility and avoid disseminating false reports that could harm his children’s reputation.
The controversy follows a directive issued yesterday by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali. The Magistrate ordered that any additional suspects involved in a fraud case amounting to Rs. 27,660,000 be arrested and produced in court. The fraud involved showcasing photos of luxury vehicles imported from foreign countries that were never cleared.
During the court proceedings, a lawyer representing a suspect alleged that the mastermind behind the fraud was not his client but a security guard employed by Chathurika Sirisena, the former President’s daughter. This claim seemingly triggered the news report in question.
Sirisena’s statement seeks to clarify the situation and urge the public to disregard unverified reports. He maintains that neither he nor his family members are connected to the alleged incident and calls for responsible reporting from the media to prevent the spread of false information.
