Deputy Minister of Public Security, Sunil Watagala, has announced that an impeachment motion against the President of the Court of Appeal, Judge Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, is prepared and signatures for the motion have been collected.
“The government has decided to move forward with this impeachment motion, and the necessary signatures have already been gathered,” Watagala said, addressing the media.
The decision comes amid reports suggesting that Judge Karunaratne may step down from his post before the motion proceeds. “Since there are claims that he intends to resign, further steps will depend on verifying this information,” Watagala added.
Judge Karunaratne is nearing the end of his tenure, with only a few days remaining before his official retirement. His service will conclude once the necessary documentation and formalities are finalized.
The move to impeach a senior judicial figure has drawn significant attention, raising questions about the timing and implications of such a decision so close to his retirement.
