Former Deputy Minister Dr. Mervin Silva has expressed strong criticism, claiming that some individuals around the President are falsely elevating themselves by adopting titles such as “Dr.” and “Professor” without possessing practical knowledge.
Speaking to the media after paying homage at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, Dr. Silva emphasized that intellect and practicality are more important than degrees or titles.
He remarked, “Even if someone holds a degree, without practical application, it is meaningless. A blacksmith who grinds iron often possesses more relevant knowledge than these so-called professors.”
Dr. Silva also highlighted that medical degrees obtained abroad lose their validity after five years if the holder does not practice in a public, private, or foreign institution, underlining the importance of continuous application of knowledge.
He warned, “If this trend continues, the country’s institutions, including temples, could face a great curse, and the sea itself may overflow.”
Dr. Silva’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the qualifications and effectiveness of those in influential government positions.
