President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that China will fund the construction of a state-of-the-art exhibition and convention center in Colombo Port City. This landmark project is designed to significantly boost Sri Lanka’s capacity to host international trade conferences and large-scale events, enhancing the country’s profile as a hub for global gatherings.
The new facility, which will be funded entirely by China, is expected to exceed the size and functionality of the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. Positioned strategically within the Colombo Port City, it aims to reinforce Sri Lanka’s role in international trade and diplomacy while drawing significant global attention to the island nation.
During President Dissanayake’s recent visit to China, a grant of 500 million yuan (approximately Rs. 20 billion) was pledged by the Chinese government. This non-repayable donation will be allocated to alleviate rural poverty and enhance public services, demonstrating a broader commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s development beyond urban infrastructure.
The exhibition and convention center project represents a significant step forward in the Colombo Port City’s evolution as a modern financial and commercial hub. It also underscores the strengthening of bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and China, promising opportunities for economic growth and international engagement.
