The Sri Lanka Railway Department has launched the much-anticipated ‘Ella Odyssey’, a special tourist train service designed to offer both local and foreign travelers a breathtaking journey through the picturesque upcountry railway route. The maiden journey of this exclusive train service commenced from Kandy Railway Station at 9:45 AM today, marking the beginning of a unique weekend travel experience.
Operating exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays, the train is scheduled to depart Kandy at 9:45 AM and reach its final destination, Demodara Railway Station, at 5:22 PM. The return journey from Demodara to Kandy is set to begin at 6:00 PM, offering passengers a full-day scenic experience through Sri Lanka’s misty mountains, lush tea plantations, and iconic railway bridges.
The Ella Odyssey has a total capacity of 396 seats, providing a premium travel experience across three classes. The train features 176 reserved first-class seats, 176 reserved second-class seats, and 44 third-class reserved seats, ensuring a comfortable journey for all types of travelers. Ticket prices have been set at Rs. 7,000 for first class, Rs. 6,000 for second class, and Rs. 5,000 for third class.
Unlike regular trains, the Ella Odyssey follows a limited-stop schedule, halting only at Peradeniya, Nawalapitiya, Hatton, Great Western, Nanu Oya, Pattipola, Ohiya, Idalgashinna, Haputale, Bandarawela, and Ella railway stations. A special 10-minute stop has been scheduled at the Araku Nava Bridge, allowing passengers to enjoy one of the most scenic spots along the journey. Additionally, the train will slow down at carefully selected sightseeing locations, ensuring that passengers can fully appreciate the breathtaking landscapes.
