Former MP Sujeewa Senasinghe, who has repeatedly maintained his innocence in the bond scam, has announced that he will donate the Rs. 250 million he is set to receive as compensation for defamation to help the needy.
Speaking to ‘Newswire’, Senasinghe stated that he intends to deposit the compensation as a fixed deposit, with the interest benefiting two major hospitals. He revealed plans to allocate Rs. 150 million to the Cancer Hospital and Rs. 100 million to Peradeniya Hospital, ensuring long-term support for these medical institutions.
In addition to the hospital donations, Senasinghe also intends to contribute to his mother’s charity, which focuses on providing care for orphans. He emphasized that none of the compensation money will be used for personal benefit, but rather for charitable causes that support the well-being of Sri Lankans in need.
This comes after a court ruling ordered former Minister C.B. Ratnayake to pay Rs. 250 million in damages to Sujeewa Senasinghe over defamatory remarks made during a television program. In his comments, Ratnayake accused Senasinghe of being involved in the controversial bond scam, which led to the defamation case.
Following the ruling, sources indicate that C.B. Ratnayake intends to appeal the decision, prolonging the legal battle. However, Senasinghe remains firm in his decision to use the awarded compensation for charitable work, reinforcing his commitment to clearing his name and contributing to society.
