Former Australian Test cricketer Stuart MacGill was found guilty in a Sydney court on Thursday for his involvement in the supply of cocaine. However, after more than six hours of jury deliberation, the 54-year-old was acquitted of a more serious charge related to commercial-scale drug supply.
According to police, the retired leg-spinner introduced his personal cocaine dealer to an associate in 2021. Investigators alleged that the two individuals went on to arrange a US$200,000 drug deal without MacGill’s direct involvement in the transaction itself.
Despite this, the jury determined that MacGill had knowingly participated in the supply of a prohibited drug, leading to his conviction, as documented in Sydney district court records. He is scheduled to be sentenced in May.
MacGill represented Australia in 44 Test matches between 1998 and 2008, with his career running parallel to that of Shane Warne, regarded as one of the greatest spin bowlers in cricket history.
