Former Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup winning coach Davenell Whatmore speaking on a youtube channel said that according to the written ‘Time Out’ law, the Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hassan need not have appealed to have had the Sri Lankan batter Angelo Mathews Timed Out.
Whatmore said “At no point is it stated in the law that the batsman will be deemed out on an appeal made by the on-field skipper, it just states that the incoming batter will be Timed Out. I don’t really know if there needs to be an appeal or not.”
” It looked like Shakib was appealing because he had his hands stretched out.” said Whatmore.
Whatmore went on to state that he felt Mathews was not guilty of doing anything intentionally. He was there as required. But as soon as he went to tighten his helmet strap it broke loose. He then asked for a new helmet and that’s when the time ticked on”
“If Angelo Mathews knew the consequences, I am sure he would have thrown the helmet and faced up a ball and then asked for a replacement helmet. It was a spinner bowling.”
“The Law will most certainly have to be rewritten to include words such as, intentionally or willfully delayed by the batter. The on-field umpire will have to decide on that.” Whatmore went on to further say.
The MCC Timed Out Law reads ” 40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
Meanwhile Angelo Mathews speaking at the press briefing after the match, stated that common sense had not been applied by the on-field umpires. He went on to add that according to a timer that he had in his possession, he was still within five seconds of the stipulated two-minute requirement to be at the crease.”
Meanwhile, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the custodian of the laws of cricket, released a statement and in its verdict sided with the on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, stating that Mathews was in violation of the playing conditions.”
The Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hassan in his defense said that it was a must win game for his side. “If it’s in the rules why not take those chances.” Shakib went on to further add.
This is the first time that the Timed-Out mode of dismissal had been recorded in an international cricket match. It had nevertheless been recorded on six previous occasions, albeit in first class cricket matches.
The post-incident saga escalated even further, when an individual named Trevin Mathews the supposed brother of Angelo, had posted a comment on Facebook, stating that Shakib Al Hassan will be stoned if he ever sets foot in Sri Lanka.
This posted comment by Trevin Mathews soon went viral on many social media platforms, with several commentators expressing their displeasure with it.
