(COLOMBO) – A poverty-stricken Sri Lankan woman who allegedly sold her infant twins for Rs.50, 000 (US$150) refused to take custody of the children, a local court was told.
The woman who was not named said she was not financially stable to upkeep the toddlers and therefore she could not take the responsibility to care for them.
Later an unidentified man claiming that he was the legitimate father of the twins sought custody of the toddlers but it was turned down by the court since he was not legally married to the woman.
The court later ordered the children to be kept under State care at a Government run foster home supervised by the police.
The mother along with two other women was caught red-handed earlier in the week while they were in the process of the sale. They were nabbed following a tip-off provided to the local police.
The other two women were prospective buyers of the children and the trio was later released on a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 each.
