The Criminal Investigation Department has launched an inquiry into the mysterious Wolverhampton University invitation produced by Ranil Wickremesinghe, after suspicions grew that the document was conjured up months later to sanitize his London stopover.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has begun a formal investigation into an invitation letter linked to the University of Wolverhampton graduation ceremony in London, which was allegedly submitted to court on behalf of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Officials revealed that the inquiry was launched to determine whether the document was fabricated after the fact. Concerns were raised because the letter was only presented three months after the original investigation into the alleged misuse of state funds for Wickremesinghe’s private trip had commenced.
The suspicious timing has fueled doubts that the invitation was created later in an attempt to legitimize the former President’s controversial London stopover. Critics argue that the delay itself undermines the credibility of the letter and raises further questions about the authenticity of the evidence placed before the court.
On the orders of Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura, the CID has now officially taken charge of verifying the origins of the document and whether it constitutes a forged piece of evidence. The outcome of this probe could have significant implications for the ongoing case against Wickremesinghe.
