A National People’s Power Pradeshiya Sabha member was arrested for threatening police officers inside the Hingurakgoda Police Station after allegedly attempting to forcefully free his detained brother.
A member of the National People’s Power representing the Hingurakgoda Pradeshiya Sabha was taken into custody last night (4) after police said he entered the Hingurakgoda Police Station, threatened officers on duty, and used criminal force while demanding the release of his brother.
Police said the suspect, a resident of Yatiyalpathana, was already the subject of a complaint filed by two employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board. The CEB workers had reportedly gone to disconnect the electricity supply to the house of the suspect’s brother due to unpaid bills. They allege that the Pradeshiya Sabha member threatened them, obstructed them from performing their official duties, and damaged their motorcycle.
Following the complaint, police arrested the suspect’s brother. The NPP representative then arrived at the police station and, according to officers, began threatening and pressuring them to release him. Police said he continued to behave aggressively and used force inside the station, leading to his immediate arrest.
He was expected to be produced before the Hingurakgoda Magistrate’s Court today (5), and police confirmed that they would proceed with legal action over both the intimidation of CEB workers and obstruction of police duties.
Later in the day, the suspect was produced before Hingurakgoda Magistrate Duminda Karunarathne and was released on two sureties of Rs. 200,000 each. The court also issued instructions regarding further investigations into the incident.
Police said they would submit a full report to court, and additional charges may follow depending on the outcome of evidence collected, including CCTV footage and witness statements.
