A lady Pilot has taken legal action against Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne, accusing him of abandoning her and their child after promising marriage, and is now seeking a court order demanding marriage or mandatory child maintenance.
A lady pilot has filed a case against well known Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne, requesting that he be ordered either to marry her or pay maintenance for their child. Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dissanayake has fixed the case for December 8.
According to her complaint, the woman states that she was in a committed relationship with Karunaratne with the expectation of marriage. She told the court that the child she now cares for was born as a result of that relationship. She further noted that Karunaratne had assured her of marriage but later failed to honour this promise. She claims that he abandoned both her and the child, forcing her to seek judicial intervention for support.
In her petition, she asks the court to order Karunaratne to pay maintenance if he does not agree to marry her. She argues that the cricketer has a responsibility to support the child financially and that the court must ensure the child’s wellbeing.
Karunaratne, who is named as the suspect in the complaint, was not present in court during the hearing. His counsel informed the court that he was unable to attend due to being unwell and assured that he would appear on the next court date. After hearing submissions from both sides, the Additional Magistrate scheduled the case to be taken up again on December 8.
The case has drawn public attention due to the high profile nature of the cricketer and the serious personal allegations made by the complainant.
