(COLOMBO) – A Sri Lankan prison inmate had a horrifying experience after he was attacked and critically injured by a crocodile while engaging in farming inside a correction facility, officials said on Wednesday.
They said the incident took place at an open prison camp in Anuradhapura some 212 kilometres north west of the commercial capital of Colombo.
The open prison camp is a lightly guarded holding facility for minor offenders and for those ready for release after serving their respective sentences.
The inmate is currently being treated at a Government hospital in the region.
Residents in the area told officials that there have been several sightings of crocodiles in the surrounding marshes.
It was only last week that a nine-year-old-boy was killed by a crocodile while bathing in a river situated in Colombo.
His highly decomposed body was found some two days later by navy divers.
