A cabinet reshuffle driven by public outrage, internal party pressure, and presidential caution is set to redraw Sri Lanka’s power map, with Mawrata reporting a possible Prime Ministerial switch that could redefine the government’s next phase.
The weekend newspaper Mawrata reports that Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya is likely to be removed from her current post and appointed as Foreign Minister, as part of an imminent cabinet reshuffle expected within the next few days. According to the same report, the post of Prime Minister may instead be handed to current Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.
The report situates this possible shake-up against the backdrop of mounting public anger over the inclusion of a link to an inappropriate website in the Grade 6 English module linked to education reforms. That controversy, Mawrata notes, has triggered intense internal pressure from JVP members on party headquarters to act decisively.
The paper states as follows.
“In the wake of the uproar in the country over the publication of a link to an inappropriate website in the Grade 6 English module on education reforms and the publication of a link to an inappropriate website, it is learnt that the party headquarters is being put under intense pressure from the JVP members to immediately remove Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya from her post.”
According to Mawrata, discussions within the government have intensified, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake reportedly informing party leadership from Pelawatta of the need to manage the fallout. While the JVP has proposed appointing Bimal Ratnayake as Prime Minister, the President is said to have raised concerns that such a move could invite international pressure during an already sensitive period.
As a result, Vijitha Herath is being viewed as a more neutral option to assume the Prime Minister’s post. Should that occur, the President is reportedly considering assigning the Foreign Ministry to Harini Amarasuriya.
If confirmed, the reshuffle would mark yet another recalibration of power within the government as it navigates public trust, internal dissent, and international scrutiny.
