Severe weather alerts, heavy rain warnings, and rough seas put the island on high alert as a deep depression advances from the Bay of Bengal.
The Meteorological Department has announced that Sri Lanka’s weather is set to change from tomorrow (08) as a low pressure system in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and is expected to develop further into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.
As a result of this developing weather system, rainfall is expected to increase across several regions. The Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces are likely to experience showers or thundershowers at times, with weather conditions becoming increasingly unstable.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm may occur in the Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts. Fairly heavy rains of more than 75 mm are also forecast for the Northern province and the Anuradhapura and Kandy districts.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at times in other parts of the island, particularly after 1.00 pm, according to the latest weather forecast.

Strong winds reaching speeds of about 50 to 60 kmph may occur at times in the eastern slopes of the Central Highlands, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, Northwestern and Eastern provinces. Windy conditions are also expected in the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Hambantota and Monaragala.
A special warning has been issued to the fishing and naval communities due to adverse sea conditions. Authorities advise refraining from sea activities from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee and Hambantota via Pottuvil from January 07. From January 08 onwards, fishing and naval activities around the entire island should be avoided until further notice.
Sea wave heights may rise to between 2.5 and 3.0 meters, making sea areas rough to very rough. The Disaster Management Center urges the public to take precautions against lightning and strong winds. For emergencies and updates, the public is advised to contact the hotline number 117.
