A zero-tolerance warning from the Transport Minister puts full responsibility on bus owners, signalling that public safety will come before profit or excuses.
Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Ratnayake has issued a stern warning to private bus owners, stating that road permits will be revoked if drivers or conductors are found consuming alcohol or drugs while on duty.
Speaking at a meeting held at the Matara District Secretariat, the minister said bus owners must take full responsibility for who they employ. He stressed that owners have the authority to recruit drivers and conductors who do not use alcohol or narcotics and therefore cannot shift blame when violations occur.
Ratnayake said bus owners should be fully aware of whether those they hire are addicted to drugs or alcohol, noting that ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse. He warned that employing intoxicated staff puts passengers, pedestrians, and other road users at serious risk.
The minister also pointed out that there are sufficient job seekers in rural areas willing to work in public transport. In such a context, he said, continuing to recruit drug users for bus services is both irresponsible and dangerous.
He added that if bus owners fail to ensure sober and disciplined staff, authorities will have no alternative but to cancel their road permits without hesitation.
