Sri Lanka rolls out a sweeping national security operation for the 2026 Twenty20 World Cup, deploying round the clock surveillance, close protection units and airspace monitoring to safeguard teams, officials and fans.
With Sri Lanka set to co host the 2026 Twenty20 Cricket World Cup alongside India, the Ministry of Defence has unveiled a comprehensive and multi layered security strategy aimed at ensuring a safe and successful global sporting spectacle. Recognizing the international significance of the ICC T20 World Cup and the arrival of players, officials, journalists and thousands of spectators from across the world, authorities have activated an integrated national security plan.
The joint security framework has been prepared in coordination with the Sri Lanka Police, the tri forces, intelligence agencies and other key stakeholders. According to officials, the approach is designed to deliver maximum public order, counter terrorism preparedness and seamless event security management throughout the tournament period.
Special security arrangements will cover all match venues, team hotels, training facilities, airports and designated fan zones. Authorities will implement twenty four hour security operations, strict access control procedures, vehicle checkpoints and structured spectator management systems to prevent unauthorized entry and maintain crowd safety.
Dedicated close protection units have been assigned to participating cricket teams, tournament organizers, diplomats and distinguished guests. Enhanced surveillance systems, including expanded CCTV networks and real time intelligence coordination centres, will boost situational awareness and rapid response capabilities across host cities.
In addition to ground level measures, the Ministry of Defence has strengthened airspace monitoring to prevent unauthorized aerial activity. Emergency response teams, including medical units and disaster management personnel, will remain on high alert to respond swiftly to any contingency.
The Ministry has assured both the local public and the international community that all necessary precautions have been taken to safeguard the 2026 T20 World Cup. Spectators are urged to cooperate fully with security personnel, comply with stadium regulations and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
Officials emphasize that Sri Lanka is committed to hosting an unforgettable international cricket tournament in a secure environment. Through coordinated planning, professional execution and heightened vigilance, the country aims to demonstrate its capability to stage a world class sporting event while upholding the highest standards of security and operational excellence.
