Nipuni Wasana brought glory to Sri Lanka after winning the gold medal in the Women’s 50kg Beach Wrestling event at the 6th Asian Beach Games held in Sanya, China.
The brave Sri Lankan athlete, who adorned Mother Lanka with gold through her historic performance, arrived in the country last night (01) after her outstanding victory on the international stage.
She received a warm welcome at the Katunayake International Airport, where officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, officials from the Department of Sports Development, representatives of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka, senior Air Force Officers, and others were present.
Nipuni’s gold medal came after she defeated the Vietnamese athlete in a tense final match. The victory added fresh pride to Sri Lanka’s sports history and gave the country another moment of international recognition.
Her achievement is also being viewed as a major boost for women’s wrestling in Sri Lanka, especially at a time when the country is looking to strengthen its athletes for future global competitions.
The win has further highlighted the importance of investing in emerging sports beyond the country’s traditional sporting fields. For Sri Lanka, a gold medal at the Asian Beach Games is not only a personal triumph for Nipuni, but also a national achievement.
This victory is being seen as a clear demonstration of the success of the “Mission Olympic” program implemented by the Ministry of Sports.
What happens next could be critical, as Nipuni Wasana’s success may inspire more young Sri Lankan athletes to pursue international medals and push the country closer to making its Olympic ambitions a reality.
