Teldeniya murder investigation expands as police search for a suspect after a woman’s body was found inside a vehicle near hospital.
Teldeniya murder investigators are searching for a 35-year-old suspect after the body of a young woman was found inside a motor vehicle near the Teldeniya Hospital in Kandy on the 17th.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Nuwara Eliya Police have revealed that the victim had stayed for several days at a tourist hotel in Nuwara Eliya with her boyfriend on two separate occasions.
According to police information, the suspect had first arrived at the hotel with the young woman on the 2nd and left on the 10th.
The young woman later returned to the same hotel alone on the 16th. The suspect then arrived at the tourist hotel at around 9:00 p.m. on the 17th in a rented vehicle.
A security officer at the hotel told police that the suspect had informed hotel security staff that his wife was unwell. He then reportedly carried the woman out of the hotel, paid the hotel bill, placed her inside the vehicle and drove away.
The deceased has been identified as P.R. Shyama Darshani Ampāra, a 33-year-old physiotherapist from the Weligama area who had worked at the Ampāra Hospital.
Director of the Ampāra District General Hospital, Dr. Nissanka Wirejatna, said she had submitted documents regarding her resignation from employment in 2023, stating that she was going abroad.
Nuwara Eliya Police, who are investigating the incident, suspect that her boyfriend, identified as 35-year-old T.M.S. Dineth Disanayake from Kannoruwa, had argued with the victim, killed her, transported the body from the hotel, placed it in the vehicle and abandoned it near the Teldeniya Hospital in Kandy.
Police further suspect that he later informed Teldeniya Police about the body through a telephone call before fleeing.
The hotel’s security camera system had recorded footage of the suspect carrying the young woman, whose face had been covered.
A senior officer of the Nuwara Eliya Police said investigators had obtained relevant information from Teldeniya Police and were continuing inquiries into the death of the young woman.
Nuwara Eliya Police have released photographs of the suspect to the media as investigations continue.
