A police raid meant to uncover illegal firearms at a luxury Colombo hotel has now turned into a major internal crisis, after officers allegedly found a team of lawyers already waiting inside before the operation could even begin. The stunning development has raised urgent questions over whether sensitive details of the court-backed raid were leaked from within the system.
Police Probe Suspected Leak After Hotel Raid Is Compromised
Police have launched an internal investigation to identify suspected informants within their own ranks after a tactical raid on a luxury hotel tied to former government minister Johnston Fernando was compromised, officials said.
Strike Force Executes Court-Backed Search Warrant
A team of roughly 55 officers from the Panadura Walana Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force arrived at the four-story city hotel in Slave Island, Colombo, executing a search warrant issued by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
The operation was launched following specific intelligence indicating that illegal firearms were hidden inside the premises.
Legal Team Already Waiting At Hotel
However, when tactical teams breached the property, they were met by a defense team of six attorneys who were already positioned at the hotel waiting for them.
The immediate presence of a legal team before police could even set up a perimeter has sparked a security crisis within the department, prompting senior commanders to order a full audit of the operation’s logistical pipeline to establish who tipped off the hotel management.
Raid Target Linked To Former Minister Johnston Fernando
The target of the raid adds to a growing list of legal battles for Fernando, a highly controversial political figure and former Chief Government Whip.
He has faced a string of high-profile state investigations over the last decade, spanning financial corruption, abuse of power, and criminal charges.
Ethanol And Luxury Vehicle Investigations
Most recently, Fernando, alongside his two sons, was remanded in connection with a major multi-agency investigation by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division regarding the alleged misappropriation of state property and the unauthorized diversion of 100,000 liters of ethanol using state-owned transport vehicles.
He was also arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department following the discovery of an unregistered, illegally assembled luxury vehicle hidden at a star-class hotel premises in Colombo.
Bribery Commission Indictments And Protest Violence Probes
Furthermore, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption maintains active indictments against Fernando for failing to declare asset liabilities and for allegedly causing massive multi-million-rupee losses to the state.
The allegations relate to the illegal deployment of more than 150 state employees from Lanka Sathosa for political election work during his tenure as Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister.
Outside of financial crimes, Fernando remains a central figure in criminal probes surrounding the alleged incitement of mob violence against peaceful demonstrators in Colombo during the 2022 public protests.
Investigators Examine Possible Leak Points
The stunning breakdown of this latest firearm raid has left senior command scrutinizing three potential choke points where the highly classified operational details could have been leaked to the former MP’s inner circle.
Court Registry Under Initial Scrutiny
Initial scrutiny is directed at the court registry where the search warrant was processed.
Because multiple clerks, minor staff, and administrative officials handle the filing of such applications, investigators believe a tip-off may have originated from within the court system the moment the paperwork was finalized.
Panadura Walana Unit Communications Audited
Detectives are also auditing the internal communications of the Panadura Walana unit itself.
Mobilizing a force of dozens of personnel requires advance coordination, and investigators are reviewing the digital trails, personal phone logs, and encrypted messaging records of all staff briefed on the raid.
Slave Island Police Notification Also Reviewed
Police are also checking whether the leak occurred during mandatory jurisdictional notifications.
Under standard operating protocols, specialized units frequently brief local stations, in this instance the Slave Island Police, immediately before executing a warrant to avoid operational friction.
Investigators are probing whether localized political connections were used to pass a quick warning to hotel management.
Four-Hour Search Finds No Weapons
An exhaustive four-hour search of the hotel property yielded no weapons or contraband.
Police recorded a formal statement from the hotel’s general manager before withdrawing from the scene.
Disciplinary And Legal Action Promised
The police department has stated that strict disciplinary and legal action will be taken against any officer or administrative staff member found to have compromised the integrity of the operation.
