Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo scored twice each as the Netherlands demolished Sweden 5-1 in Houston and surged to the top of FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F.
Ronald Koeman’s side had been held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in their opening match, while Sweden arrived after recording an emphatic 5-1 victory over Tunisia.
The anticipated close contest never developed. The Netherlands attacked with pace and precision from the opening whistle, immediately exposing weaknesses in Sweden’s defensive organisation.
Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute, giving the Dutch the early reward their aggressive start deserved. Sweden struggled to deal with his strength and movement through the centre.
The striker struck again in the 17th minute, leaving Sweden with a two-goal deficit before they had established any rhythm. Koeman’s pressing structure repeatedly forced hurried passes and turnovers.
Gakpo extended the advantage shortly after halftime, scoring in the 47th minute to remove any realistic prospect of a Swedish comeback. His movement from the left gave Sweden another problem they were unable to solve.
The Liverpool forward added his second seven minutes later as the Netherlands moved 4-0 ahead. Their finishing was ruthless, turning defensive errors and transitional opportunities into goals.
Anthony Elanga pulled one back for Sweden in the 59th minute. The substitute’s pace brought greater attacking intent, but the goal offered little more than temporary consolation.
Crysencio Summerville completed the scoring in the 89th minute. His late finish underlined the depth available to Koeman and capped one of the tournament’s most authoritative attacking displays.
Sweden registered opportunities and enjoyed periods of pressure, but their defensive lapses proved decisive. Graham Potter’s team was particularly vulnerable in wide areas and struggled whenever the Netherlands increased the tempo.
The result moved the Dutch to four points and dramatically improved their goal difference. Japan’s victory over Tunisia placed the two teams level on points heading into the final round.
The Netherlands will meet eliminated Tunisia on June 25, knowing another victory should secure a favourable position in the knockout stage. Sweden face Japan in a match that will determine whether their campaign continues.
For Koeman, the performance answered several questions raised by the opening draw. Brobbey’s finishing, Gakpo’s movement and Frenkie de Jong’s control gave the Netherlands a balance Sweden could not match.
The scale of the victory also delivered a warning to the tournament’s leading contenders. After surrendering two leads against Japan, the Netherlands responded with five goals and a display built on speed, pressure and clinical finishing.
