Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga defeated another world-class javelin field in Doha, adding to an extraordinary season that has transformed him into a major global contender.
Sri Lankan javelin star Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continued his remarkable rise on the international athletics circuit by winning the men’s javelin at the Doha Diamond League on Friday, June 19, 2026.
The competition began at 8:44 p.m. in Qatar, equivalent to 11:14 p.m. in Sri Lanka, at the Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium.
Tharanga produced the winning distance of 88.68 metres with his fourth-round attempt. His complete series was 82.62m, 84.63m, 80.53m, 88.68m, 84.47m and 81.35m.
Two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada finished second with a season-best 86.38m, while American Curtis Thompson placed third with another season-best performance of 85.99m.
India’s Olympic champion and two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra finished fourth with 85.69m.
Tharanga’s winning margin over Peters was exactly 2.30 metres, underlining the Sri Lankan’s control of a competition containing several of the world’s most accomplished javelin throwers.
The victory came only three days after Tharanga won at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on Tuesday, June 16.
The Ostrava competition started at 7:07 p.m. local time, or 10:37 p.m. in Sri Lanka. Tharanga opened with 85.87m before improving to 86.30m and then recording the winning distance of 86.57m in the third round.
Each of his three valid throws would have been enough to win the competition. Peters finished second with 84.27m, leaving Tharanga with another winning margin of 2.30 metres.
However, the defining performance of Tharanga’s season came at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea Diamond League meeting in Rome on Thursday, June 4.
The men’s javelin began at 7:10 p.m. in Rome, equivalent to 10:40 p.m. in Sri Lanka.
After opening with 84.49m, Tharanga launched the javelin 92.62m in the second round. The extraordinary performance established a new Sri Lankan national record, meeting record and 2026 world-leading mark.
It also made Tharanga the eighth-best performer in the history of the modern men’s javelin event.
His throw surpassed the previous Rome meeting record of 90.34m, established by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen in July 2006. It also improved Tharanga’s previous national record of 89.37m, achieved at Diyagama on March 28, 2026.
His Rome victory followed a second-place finish at the Rabat Diamond League on May 31, where he recorded 85.97m.
Earlier in the season, Tharanga won the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on April 24 with a meeting-record throw of 89.28m. That performance came in the second round and placed him comfortably ahead of Germany’s Thomas Röhler, who finished second with 83.33m.
Tharanga also began his international season with victories in Australia. He won the Perth Track Classic on February 14 with 83.07m before taking another victory at the Hobart Track Classic on February 28 with 80.12m.
The 23-year-old had already established himself on the global stage during the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Competing in the men’s javelin final on September 18, 2025, Tharanga finished seventh with a best throw of 84.38m. The final began at 7:27 p.m. in Japan, equivalent to 3:57 p.m. in Sri Lanka.
His international breakthrough had gathered momentum the previous month when he won the Indian Open in Bhubaneswar on August 10 with a then-national-record throw of 86.50m.
Tharanga is also among the Sri Lankan athletes awarded an IOC Olympic Solidarity Scholarship to support preparations and qualification efforts for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
With victories in Perth, Hobart, Nairobi, Rome, Ostrava and Doha during 2026, Tharanga has moved beyond the status of an emerging prospect.
His ability to repeatedly exceed 85 metres, defeat world champions and produce a throw beyond 92 metres has established him as one of the leading performers of the current international season.
For Sri Lankan athletics, his progress represents a genuine opportunity to challenge for honours at the world’s biggest competitions.
