Morocco knock Netherlands out after a 3-2 shootout win in Monterrey, with Issa Diop’s late header and Ismael Saibari’s penalty sealing it.
Morocco knock Netherlands out of the FIFA World Cup after a tense 3-2 penalty shootout win, following a gripping 1-1 draw in Monterrey.
The round-of-32 clash brought together two unbeaten teams with serious knockout ambitions. The Netherlands entered the tie after topping Group F in a high-scoring campaign. Morocco, meanwhile, had advanced from Group C with seven points after drawing with Brazil and beating Scotland and Haiti.
Morocco Knock Netherlands Out In Monterrey Thriller
From the first whistle, this looked like one of the strongest knockout ties of the tournament. The Netherlands tried to control the tempo through midfield. However, Morocco played with pace, aggression and belief.
The Atlas Lions were not interested in simply surviving. They pressed high, countered quickly and created the sharper early moments.
Morocco tested Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen several times before the breakthrough eventually came at the other end. Ayoub Bouaddi and Neil El Aynaoui both forced important saves. Achraf Hakimi also struck the crossbar during one of Morocco’s best attacking spells.
The warning signs were clear, but the Netherlands held firm.
The Dutch punished Morocco in the 72nd minute. Cody Gakpo, carrying an emotional personal burden, produced a composed finish to give Ronald Koeman’s side the lead. For a while, it looked as though the Netherlands had found the one clinical moment needed to escape a difficult knockout match.
But Morocco refused to accept elimination. Mohamed Ouahbi’s side kept attacking and pushed more bodies forward. They stretched the Dutch defence with crosses, quick combinations and set-piece pressure.
Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. Issa Diop rose strongly and headed home the equaliser, turning the match on its head.
Issa Diop Header Changes The Story
The goal changed everything. What had looked like a painful Moroccan exit suddenly became a test of nerve, endurance and belief.
The Netherlands, only minutes away from the last 16, were dragged into extra time by a team that refused to disappear.
Extra time produced more tension than clear chances. Both sides looked physically drained after a demanding and emotional match. The Netherlands tried to regain control, but Morocco’s back line stood firm.
Yassine Bounou also brought calm to the penalty area whenever the Dutch pushed forward. His presence became more important as the contest moved closer to penalties.
By the time the match reached the shootout, the atmosphere had turned electric. The penalties were chaotic, dramatic and cruel. The Netherlands scored through Teun Koopmeiners and Wout Weghorst, but key misses gave Morocco a way back.
Hakimi also missed a chance to finish the tie earlier, which kept the drama alive.
Then Bounou delivered the decisive goalkeeping moment. He saved from Crysencio Summerville and gave Morocco another chance to complete the upset.
Ismael Saibari stepped forward with the pressure of a nation on his shoulders. He converted the winning penalty and sent Morocco into celebration.
Bounou And Saibari Seal Morocco’s Moment
Saibari’s finish sent Moroccan players sprinting across the pitch. The Dutch, meanwhile, stood stunned after a group stage that had promised so much.
For Morocco, it became another famous World Cup night. For the Netherlands, it ended as a brutal exit after they had appeared to be in control.
Koeman will now face difficult questions about game management, substitutions and why his side failed to protect the lead after Gakpo’s goal.
Morocco, however, continue to strengthen their reputation as one of world football’s most dangerous knockout teams.
The Atlas Lions now face co-hosts Canada in the round of 16 on July 4. After reaching the semifinals in 2022 and surviving this penalty drama in 2026, Morocco have again shown they are no longer outsiders on the World Cup stage.
