Colombo fire incidents have reached 258 this year, alongside 17 rescues and emergency calls involving fallen trees and road accidents.
The number of Colombo fire incidents reported so far this year has reached 258, according to the Fire Department, while crews have carried out 17 rescue operations.
The incidents occurred within the Colombo Municipal Council area and surrounding suburbs from January to date. The total has renewed concern about fire prevention and emergency readiness across homes, workplaces and public areas.
By comparison, authorities recorded 382 fires in the same area last year, along with 46 rescue operations.
The department also received 13 emergency calls involving road obstructions, fallen trees and rescue work linked to traffic accidents.
Main Causes of Colombo Fire Incidents
Officials identified several recurring causes. These include inadequate fire-safety measures at workplaces and failures to respond quickly during emergencies.
Unsafe electrical work in homes and commercial premises also contributed. Meanwhile, dry weather conditions have increased the risk of fires spreading rapidly.
The figures highlight the need for stronger precautions, safer electrical practices and faster emergency responses.
