Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam was taken into custody on Monday, August 10, as the Sagara Kariyawasam arrest drew fresh political attention. Ada Derana and News 1st both reported the arrest on Monday morning.
The Attorney-at-Law was arrested by the Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Bureau (CCIB) after arriving to provide a statement in connection with controversial remarks about Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya.
Kariyawasam had been summoned to appear before investigators as part of an inquiry into comments he made at a media briefing held at the SLPP headquarters on August 3.
During that briefing, he criticised the conduct of the police leadership. He also urged the IGP to serve the State and the public rather than the government.
His remarks referred to the fate of previous police chiefs and included a warning that the current IGP could meet a tragic end.
Kariyawasam said the SLPP did not want Weerasooriya to be remembered as an Inspector General of Police who died after being attacked on a roadside by members of the public.

Authorities later directed Kariyawasam to appear before investigators on August 10. News 1st reported that he arrived at the bureau at around 10.45 a.m., while his arrest was confirmed shortly afterward.

The Sagara Kariyawasam arrest has attracted political attention because he is one of the most senior figures in the SLPP. The party is closely associated with former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
