Namal Rajapaksa remanded until September 18 as Johnston Fernando is granted bail with a foreign travel ban in a separate corruption case.
Namal Rajapaksa remanded until September 18 after the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested the Parliamentarian and produced him before court.
The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court issued the remand order after Rajapaksa was brought before the court following his arrest.
Meanwhile, former Minister Johnston Fernando, who was also arrested today over a separate corruption allegation, was granted bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama.
Fernando faces allegations that he caused a financial loss to the government by failing to follow the proper procurement procedure when supplying chairs worth Rs. 7.4 million for the Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre in Polgolla, Kandy.
Authorities arrested the former Minister this morning in connection with the investigation.
After Fernando was produced before court, the Magistrate ordered his release on bail.
The court also imposed a foreign travel ban on him.
The two court decisions therefore produced different outcomes on the same day, with Namal Rajapaksa remanded until September 18 while Johnston Fernando was released on bail subject to the travel restriction.
The allegations against Fernando remain allegations unless and until established through the legal process.
