Israeli Embassy Bangkok protest with demonstrators carrying Thai flags and placards calling for respect for Thai laws
BANGKOK, Thailand – The Israeli Embassy Bangkok protest drew hundreds of demonstrators on Thursday, demanding that foreign visitors respect Thailand’s laws, culture and local communities amid growing public concern over the conduct of some tourists.
The September 10 demonstration saw protesters carrying Thai national flags and placards calling for greater respect for Thai people. While the protest focused heavily on complaints involving some Israeli visitors, concerns about the behaviour of foreign tourists more broadly have also intensified in Thailand.
Media entrepreneur and political activist Sondhi Limthongkul led the demonstration. He also delivered an open letter addressed to Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Alona Fisher-Kamm.
Sondhi accused some Israeli visitors of violating Thai laws, causing public disturbances and failing to respect local customs. Protesters also raised concerns about alleged attempts by foreigners to circumvent restrictions governing businesses and property ownership.
Israeli Embassy Bangkok Protest Comes Amid Tougher Measures
The Israeli Embassy Bangkok protest comes as Thai authorities strengthen measures against foreigners who violate immigration regulations or engage in behaviour considered harmful to local communities.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul recently ordered the deportation of an Israeli national convicted of threatening a zoo owner on the tourist island of Koh Samui after the establishment displayed a Palestinian flag.
The case became the first application of new regulations intended to make it easier to deport foreigners who break Thai laws or engage in what authorities describe as “undesirable behaviour.”
The issue is particularly sensitive because tourism remains a major contributor to Thailand’s economy. Israeli visitors generated approximately $1.2 billion of Thailand’s $48 billion in tourism income last year.
More than 277,000 Israeli tourists visited Thailand during the first eight months of 2026, representing an increase of about 7% compared with the same period in 2025.
Israeli Embassy Responds to Tourist Concerns
The Israeli Embassy has acknowledged concerns surrounding the behaviour of some Israeli tourists.
Deputy Chief of Mission Rami Teplitskiy said the embassy was aware of negative sentiment surrounding the behaviour of some Israeli tourists. He said it would continue working to strengthen relations and encourage mutual respect.
Israeli visitors are also expected to receive official guidance reminding them to observe Thai laws and cultural practices. Ambassador Fisher-Kamm has proposed a “do’s and don’ts” guide for Israelis travelling in Thailand.
Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and Fisher-Kamm have also held discussions aimed at addressing the concerns.
However, the controversy is not limited to Israeli tourists. Thailand has recently faced other incidents involving foreign visitors, including a widely circulated confrontation involving Italian students on a Bangkok train.
The Israeli Embassy Bangkok protest therefore comes amid a broader debate over tourism, foreign visitors and respect for local laws. For Thailand, the challenge is to protect its position as a major international tourism destination while ensuring visitors follow the country’s laws and respect its communities.
