Rohitha Bogollagama was arrested by CIABOC after appearing to give a statement over an alleged corruption offence and is due in court.
COLOMBO — Former Minister Rohitha Bogollagama was arrested on Wednesday by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption after appearing before investigators to provide a statement over an alleged corruption offence.
Bogollagama had arrived at the Bribery Commission on October 7 in connection with the allegation and was taken into custody after being questioned by investigators.
He is expected to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Further details concerning the alleged offence, including the specific transaction or conduct under investigation, had not been publicly disclosed at the time of reporting.
Arrest Followed Appearance Before CIABOC
Bogollagama’s arrest came after he voluntarily appeared before CIABOC investigators to provide a statement in relation to the allegation.
Reports said investigators questioned the former minister before taking him into custody.
CIABOC had not, at the time of the initial reports, released detailed information setting out the factual basis of the allegation or the evidence being examined.
The absence of those details means the precise nature of the investigation remains unclear.
An arrest does not amount to a finding of guilt, and any allegation against Bogollagama will have to be established through the legal process.
Court Appearance Expected
The former minister is expected to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court following his arrest.
At that stage, CIABOC investigators are expected to place the relevant facts before court, after which the magistrate may consider any applications concerning bail, further investigation or other procedural matters.
Until those submissions are made publicly, it would be premature to draw conclusions about the substance or seriousness of the allegation beyond what investigators have formally disclosed.
Bogollagama remains entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until a court finds otherwise.
Details of Allegation Still Awaited
Initial reports have described the matter only as an alleged corruption offence.
No detailed account has yet been released identifying the financial transaction, public decision or other conduct under investigation.
That distinction is important, particularly in cases involving former public officials, where an arrest can attract considerable political attention before the evidence has been presented in court.
The next significant development is expected when Bogollagama is produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and investigators provide further details of the case.
