Dambulla, July 7, 2024 — In a thrilling encounter at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, the Galle Marvels defeated the Kandy Falcons by 4 wickets in the 9th match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024. The win propels Galle Marvels up the league standings, showcasing their strong form in this year’s competition.
Opting to bat first, the Kandy Falcons struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Galle bowling attack. Andre Fletcher top-scored with a solid 50 off 36 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes, but wickets tumbled regularly at the other end. Kandy’s innings concluded at 118 for 5 in 15.3 overs due to a rain-shortened match. Wanindu Hasaranga, their captain, chipped in with an unbeaten 26 off 15 balls, but the team could not post a challenging total.
Isuru Udana was the pick of the bowlers for Galle, finishing with figures of 3 for 19 from his 4 overs. Maheesh Theekshana provided excellent support, taking 2 wickets for 28 runs. Their combined efforts ensured that Kandy could never really get going and were always under pressure to accelerate.
In response, the Galle Marvels chased down the target of 119 with relative ease, finishing at 122 for 6 in 15 overs. Alex Hales provided a solid foundation with a brisk 40 off 28 balls, hitting 5 boundaries and a six. Bhanuka Rajapaksa further anchored the innings with a crucial 32 off 20 deliveries. Despite some resistance from Kandy’s bowlers, Galle managed to cross the finish line comfortably, with 15 balls to spare.
This victory marks an important win for Galle Marvels as they continue their campaign in the LPL 2024. The Kandy Falcons, despite a spirited performance, will need to regroup and strategize for their upcoming matches to stay in contention.
