Colombo — The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the drafting of new legislation to address ongoing issues within Sri Lanka Cricket. This decision comes in response to recommendations from the K.T. Chitrasiri report, which outlined necessary reforms for the cricket board.
A new constitution for Sri Lanka Cricket, developed by the committee led by K.T. Chitrasiri, is at the heart of the proposed changes. The Cabinet has endorsed a joint proposal from several key ministers, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Power and Energy, the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, and the Minister of Public Security. This proposal directs the Legal Draftsman to prepare a bill to formally adopt and implement the new constitution.
The move is intended to address the structural and governance issues that have plagued Sri Lanka Cricket and to enhance the management and administration of the sport in the country. The proposed legislation is expected to bring about significant changes to the cricket board’s operations and governance, aiming to restore its integrity and effectiveness.
The new constitution is anticipated to outline clear guidelines for the administration of cricket in Sri Lanka, address any conflicts of interest, and establish a more transparent and accountable management structure. The drafting of the bill marks a crucial step toward implementing these reforms and improving the overall functioning of Sri Lanka Cricket.
