Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has expressed concerns regarding the safety of its Test team as they prepare for a three-match series against England, starting August 21 in Manchester. The concerns arise in the wake of anti-immigrant riots that have erupted across the United Kingdom.
A report from ESPNCricinfo reveals that Sri Lankan players currently in England—comprising seven players and two support staff—have requested enhanced security from their cricket board. Their plea comes as they travel to and from a venue near London amidst widespread unrest targeting immigrants in the UK.
The riots followed a tragic stabbing incident in Southport, where three children lost their lives. Misinformation regarding the attackers has led to attacks on immigrants, their businesses, and places of worship by far-right groups.
A Sri Lankan player mentioned, “Most of the issues seem not to be close to where we are but everyone is still a little concerned. We can’t really go out to dinner or do anything like that. Mostly we stay in the hotel. No one wants to run into trouble and get beaten up.”
The Sri Lankan team has asked for enhanced security until the main squad arrives. However, they have yet to receive a response from their board regarding these arrangements.
The majority of the Test team is expected to arrive in England on Sunday, after which the security measures organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will be implemented. The ECB has reassured SLC and the team about the security protocols in place. “I raised the issue with them, but the ECB responded very quickly and sent us their comprehensive security arrangements. We’ll be having a security liaison on the tour from them as well,” said Sri Lanka’s team manager, Mahinda Halangoda.
Additionally, the UK government has assured sporting bodies, following an emergency call on Wednesday, that the country remains safe for sporting events. The police have pledged to crack down on those involved in violence. Following the first Test in Manchester, Sri Lanka and England will proceed with matches at Lord’s, starting August 29, and at The Oval, beginning September 6.
