Dilith Jayaweera, leader of the Mawbima Janatha Party (MJP) and a prominent entrepreneur, has officially entered the race for the Sri Lankan Presidential Election scheduled for September 21. Jayaweera signed his nomination papers at the MJP head office in Borella.
The ceremony was attended by key figures from the ‘Sarvajana Balaya’ alliance, including Vasudeva Nanayakkara, D. E. W. Gunasekera, Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, and Gevindu Kumarathunga. Jayaweera will represent the alliance under the ‘Star’ symbol.
The announcement of Jayaweera as the Presidential candidate was made on August 4 by Wimal Weerawansa during a convention at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo.
Additionally, the security deposit required to contest the election was submitted to the Election Commission on August 13 by Dr. G. Weerasinghe, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Communist Party, on behalf of Jayaweera.
