President’s Counsel Ronald Perera has officially placed the required deposit for President Ranil Wickremesinghe to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election. The deposit was submitted at the Election Commission Office in Rajagiriya on the morning of July 26, 2024.
The Election Commission has set the period for depositing election bonds from 8:30 AM on July 26 until 12 noon on August 14, 2024. For a candidate nominated by a recognized political party, the deposit amount is Rs. 50,000. Candidates nominated by other political parties or by individual electors are required to deposit Rs. 75,000.
Additionally, the Election Commission has issued a Gazette notification confirming the schedule for the 2024 Presidential Election. The election is set to take place on September 21, 2024. Nominations for the election will be accepted on August 15, 2024.
This move by Wickremesinghe, who is running independently despite his status as the current President, marks a significant development in the electoral landscape as the country prepares for the upcoming presidential race.
