The Court of Appeal has directed former Member of Parliament Mrs. Hirunika Premachandra to appear before the court on the next scheduled hearing concerning a complaint filed against her for allegedly insulting the court. The case, brought by former Uva Province Governor Mr. Hardi Jamaldin, was heard today by Judges Nishanka Bandula Karunaratne and Shashi Mahendran.
During today’s proceedings, Mrs. Premachandra’s legal representative requested additional time to file counter objections related to the complaint. The court granted this request, setting a deadline for the objections to be filed by November 29th. The case is scheduled to be heard again on December 4th, and Mrs. Premachandra has been ordered to appear in person on that date.
The complaint accuses Mrs. Premachandra of criticizing the court’s order following her release on bail by the Mt. Magistrate’s Court. The bail was in connection with an incident involving allegations of assault against a woman. Mr. Jamaldin alleges that Mrs. Premachandra’s comments amounted to an insult to the judicial system, prompting him to seek a formal hearing and appropriate judicial action.
