Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath provided an optimistic update on Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, noting that the country is nearing the completion of its debt restructuring process. The announcement comes as the Official Creditors’ Committee and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) confirmed that the recently reached agreements with sovereign bondholders align with all stipulated requirements and objectives.
Minister Herath explained that the successful completion of debt restructuring will enable the government to advance to the third review phase of the IMF’s aid program. This progress is expected to stabilize the country’s economic foundation, foster sustainable growth, and facilitate more inclusive economic development.
During a meeting with a foreign delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 14, Herath also addressed ongoing government efforts to combat fraud and corruption. He noted that the Bribery or Corruption Investigation Commission has expedited key investigations, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.
The Minister further emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing human rights and democratic concerns. He assured that steps are being taken to resolve past issues and protect the rights of all citizens, reflecting a broader agenda to restore confidence and ensure equitable governance in Sri Lanka.
