The government has announced plans to resume vehicle imports starting January, a move welcomed by the Ceylon Vehicle Importers’ Association. Association president Indika Sampath Meranchige confirmed that the government has received positive feedback regarding the decision.
Amidst concerns from the public, Meranchige addressed circulating rumors of a staggering 600% tax on imported vehicles, labeling them as unfounded. “If such exorbitant taxes were to be imposed, it would deter potential buyers entirely,” he emphasized.
He attributed the spread of these rumors to car dealership owners attempting to mislead the public. Meranchige assured consumers that the importation of vehicles is expected to stabilize the currently inflated prices, bringing them down to more reasonable levels.
As the government moves forward with this plan, many are hopeful that it will alleviate the burden of high vehicle prices that have persisted in the local market.
