Khan Younis, Gaza Strip, July 30 — Thousands of Palestinians returned to their homes in the wreckage of Khan Younis, Gaza’s southern city, following the end of a week-long Israeli military incursion. The operation, which aimed to weaken Hamas, resulted in significant casualties and widespread damage.
Casualties and Destruction
The Israeli raid, lasting eight days, caused extensive destruction and loss of life. According to Gaza’s Hamas-run media office, the assault resulted in at least 255 deaths and over 300 injuries. Israeli forces reported killing more than 150 militants and targeting tunnels and weapons caches used by Hamas. The raid heavily damaged or destroyed over 300 homes, leaving many residents to return to scenes of devastation.
Rescue Efforts
Returning residents, many of whom had been displaced multiple times, faced the grim task of recovering bodies and salvaging belongings. Emergency workers and civilians transported bodies wrapped in rugs using carts and makeshift vehicles. “I am coming back and I have faith in God,” said Etimad Al-Masri, a resident who had walked for several kilometers to her home. “Despite the suffering, we are patient and God willing, we will have victory.”
Ongoing Strikes and Evacuations
As Israeli forces withdrew from Khan Younis, new threats emerged in other areas. In al-Bureij, central Gaza, Israeli military operations prompted mass evacuations and subsequent strikes. Medics reported additional casualties from airstrikes in al-Nuseirat and Bureij, with at least 14 Palestinians killed.
Peace Talks and Humanitarian Crisis
The ongoing conflict, now in its tenth month, has seen heavy casualties on both sides. Since the war began with a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, Israeli forces have killed approximately 39,000 Palestinians, while Palestinian authorities claim that over half of these are women and children. Efforts to mediate a ceasefire continue but have so far failed to bring about a resolution, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
International Reactions
The international community remains concerned about the escalating violence and its impact on civilians. Negotiations for a ceasefire have stalled, leaving many in Gaza facing dire conditions amidst the ongoing conflict.
