Colombo, Sri Lanka – Vijitha Herath, Member of Parliament for the National People’s Force, has announced that the party’s government plans to develop the gas field in Mannar if elected. Speaking at a rally for presidential candidate Anura Dissanayake, Herath revealed that the gas deposit discovery in Mannar, initially reported by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2011, remains untapped.
Herath claimed that while Rajapaksa’s reports of discovering gas deposits in Mannar were accurate, the field had not been exploited due to various challenges. The National People’s Force aims to address these issues and initiate gas extraction under a potential Malima government, signaling a significant shift in Sri Lanka’s energy strategy.
