Mother Reflects on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s Humble Beginnings

Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the 9th Executive President of Sri Lanka, has traveled a long, challenging road to the presidency, one filled with struggles that set him apart from previous leaders. His mother, DM Seelawathi, now 86, shares the story of her son’s rise, highlighting his humble beginnings and strong moral compass.

Early Life and Childhood

Seelawathi recalls a pivotal moment from Anura’s childhood when a monk once asked her to ordain him at the age of 12. “I did not agree,” she says, showing how she steered Anura toward a different path. Another significant moment came when Anura was only six months old. A Jyotish (astrologer) who read his horoscope predicted with surprise that Anura would one day become a “king” — a prophecy that seemed far-fetched at the time but has now come true in a political sense.

Anura grew up in a home built under the Mahaweli H-system development in Kalawewa. The house is simple, located near the farming town of Tambuttegama, in the rural constituency of Anuradhapura. This rural upbringing instilled in him a love for nature and simplicity. Anura’s mother remembers how he loved flying kites and swimming in the Nalacchiya Lake, just a short walk from their home. These childhood activities were part of a life that was simple, yet fulfilling.

One of Anura’s defining traits, according to Seelawathi, is his passion for reading. “Books were like food for him,” she recalls, smiling as she remembers him climbing a tree near their home to read aloud. He was always engrossed in books, often bringing them to the dinner table. His thirst for knowledge was evident from a young age, and his parents never had to push him to study. He did so willingly, driven by an innate curiosity.

Hardships and Family Tragedy

Anura’s father worked in the metrology department, and his untimely death in 1992 was a devastating blow to the family. Seelawathi recalls how this loss only strengthened Anura’s resolve to continue his journey. Unfortunately, due to political threats, Anura could not even attend his father’s funeral, as the police and army were waiting to arrest him at the time. This period was marked by hardship and uncertainty, but it deepened Anura’s determination to fight for justice and equality in Sri Lanka.

Early Political Involvement and Death Threats

Anura’s political activism began in his youth, particularly during his A-level studies. His involvement in politics drew the attention of those who opposed his beliefs, leading to death threats against him. His family endured these threats as well, with his father’s brother, a close family member, being murdered.

Despite these dangers, Anura’s commitment to his ideals never wavered. His mother’s pride in his journey is clear. “My son is not a liar or a cheater,” she says with conviction. “He gets angry when he hears about such things.” Her wish is to one day visit the sacred sites of Anuradhapura to bless her son and his presidency.

A Humble Rise to the Presidency

Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s rise to the presidency was anything but conventional. Known for his modest lifestyle, his swearing-in ceremony was stripped of the usual pomp and ceremony. There were no horses, no elaborate dance troupes, no red carpets, and no honor guards, marking a distinct departure from the usual grandeur associated with political power in Sri Lanka. This reflected his deep connection to the common people and his belief in simplicity.

Family Values and Continued Struggles

Throughout his journey, Anura’s family has been a constant source of support. His mother, despite her age, remains proud of his achievements and continues to pray for his success. His sister, DM Sriyalatha, helps care for their mother and fondly recalls their brother’s visits whenever he returns home.

Despite the hurdles he has faced, Anura Kumara Dissanayake remains dedicated to his principles. His presidency, shaped by these personal struggles and sacrifices, reflects his vision of a more just, equitable society. As his mother proudly recalls the challenges they have overcome, she hopes that the country will recognize the honesty and integrity that has defined her son’s life.
