Celebration Returns: Minister Says Falling Prices Boost New Year Festivities A plan to increase electricity tariffs by 40%? The Electricity Users' Association alleges that there is an attempt to increase electricity tariffs by 40% behind the disruption of solar electricity. The association's national secretary, Sanjeewa Dhammika, said that the attack on the solar industry has caused a loss of five hundred and fifty million rupees to entrepreneurs and 1100 million to the government. “Due to this process, 790,000 low-cost electricity units have been lost to the system. If they are stopped like this, the power plants will run on fuel, and from that, the loss is Rs. 200 million. They are abandoning the low-cost electricity units that could have been purchased for Rs. 10 and buying electricity from their respective power plants for Rs. 50 to 100. When you do the math, the total loss from the New Year gift is about Rs. 2100 million. An opportunity has arisen for the Public Utilities Commission, an institution responsible to the people, to stand up for innocent consumers. We see that this is a preparation to increase the electricity bill from June, saying that the cost is high and the cost of production is high. The whips have come saying that a procession is coming. As the country has told Anurata, electricity has been given to Tilak.”
